Flourishing from the mid-1st century to the 3rd century AD, the Kushan Empire emerged as a major power in South and Central Asia. Established by the Yuezhi, a confederation of nomadic tribes from China, the empire stretched across what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. The Kushans achieved advancements in trading, owing largely to their strategic location at the convergence of major trade routes, including the Silk Road. Spearheaded by influential rulers like King Shaka, the Kushans released vast reserves of gold coins that artists inscribed with impeccably detailed renditions of deities from Greek, Persian, and Hindu traditions. The coins of this type probably represent the earliest coins struck by Chastana, shortly before he adopted the "hill, sun and crescents" design. It is sometimes assumed that these coins were issued before Chastana's capture of parts of Malwa, when a Satavahana symbol, a hill or chaitya, was added to the coins of Chastana. The coins of this type are very rare, even though at least one very large hoard of these coins was reportedly discovered in 2012. This is the only type of karshapana issued by any of the Katrapas that did not depict the hill along with the sun and crescents. The reverse inscription is in Brahmi only, even though a few coins seem to show some traces of an uncertain Kharoshti legend at 11 o'clock. This type is virtually never seen well-struck - the absolute majority of coins of this type are poorly struck, and the reverse inscription is always fragmentary. However, because of the unique reverse type, this type is always easy to attribute, even when the reverse inscriptions cannot be read. Two minor varieties of this type are known, one with a dot between the sun and crescent and one without the dot. Both are of about similar rarity. Some coin seem to be overstruck on the silver drachms of Nahapäna and the undertype of Nahapäna is seen on some rare specimens. These coins cannot be attributed to any particular mint, but these coins are closer in style to the future "Mint B" coins than "Mint A". Fishman type 4.2R, pg. 29, Rare.

sarabhapurias-of-chattisgarh-sri-prasannamitra-525-550-ce-gold-repousse-unit-prasannamatra-garuda-type
Sarabhapurias Of Chattisgarh, Sri Prasannamitra Gold Repousse Unit Garuda type (525-550 CE)

Sarabhapurias of Chattisgarh, Sri Prasannamitra (525-550 CE), Gold Repousse Unit (Wt: 1.30 gm, Dia: 16.01 mm)

Obverse : a figure of Garuda seated on a branch with his wings spread and a conch-shell (Shankha) and chakra on either side, sun and a crescent moon on top, Brahmi legend "Sri Prasannamitra" below the branch, a kalash at the bottom, a beaded border around the field,

Reverse : blank,

Comment : The Sharabhapuriyas ruled Dakshina Kosala, covering much of present-day Chhattisgarh and adjoining parts of Odisha, during the fifth and sixth centuries CE.
