The horseman type builds off the type minted by his father Chandragupta II and innovates with the reverse type of a goddess feeding a peacock. The obverse reads, "The unconquered and invincible Mahendra, who is a moon in the sky of the Gupta family, is victorious", and the reverse reads, "Undefeated Mahendra". Kumara was the nickname of Kartikeya, the son of lord Shiva and Hindu god of war, who rode peacock into battle. Kumaragupta I had adopted the title Mahendraditya, in reference to the nickname of the Hindu deity Indra (Mahendra), the king of the gods. The Tumen inscription of Kumaragupta, which records the dedication of a temple near Gwalior and includes a rare mention of one of his sons, adds some context to the imperial epithets on his coinage, with their emphasis on conquest, cosmology, and lineage. The inscription reads, "The son of the illustrious Chandragupta is Kumaragupta who is like the great Indra and who protected the whole earth, holding her with might and valor, as if she were his chaste lawful wife.... In the heavens arose that moon, named Ghatotkachagupta, with his cluster of rays, meaning his store of good qualities.
