Dewal Bandar rupees are seldom encountered and often show off-centre strikes or indifferent preservation. The present specimen stands out for its well-centred strike, clearly defined legends and pleasing overall detail. Exceptionally well preserved for this elusive mint, it offers a particularly desirable combination of rarity, clarity and visual appeal.
Dewal Bandar: A Rare Mughal Mint on the Sindh Coast
Dewal Bandar belonged to the maritime landscape of Sindh, where ports connected the Indus region with the trading networks of the Arabian Sea. Its coinage under Akbar reflects the extension of Mughal monetary authority into this commercially important region. The mint name “Dewal Bandar”, with bandar meaning “port,” gives this issue a distinctive maritime identity. Paired with the Ilahi month Khurdad, it brings together a regional port mint and the imperial calendar introduced under Akbar. This rare rupee offers an evocative link between Mughal administration and the commerce of Sindh’s coast.
