Description
Bengal Sultanate, Shihab ud-din Bayazid (AH 815-817/1412-1414 AD), Firuzabad Mint, Silver Tanka, AH 817, (Wt: 10.7 gms, Dia: 30.11 mm) (G&G # B283).
Obverse : Arabic legend within a octofoil "Nasir amir al-mu'minin ghawth al-islam wa'l muslimin", four caliph's, mint and date in the margin.
Reverse : Arabic legend in a scalloped multilobed cartouche "Jalal-ud dunya wa'l din Abu'l Muzaffar Muhammad Shah al-sultan" enclosed by an outer border.
A superbly centred and boldly struck specimen on an exceptionally broad flan. The generous space around the design reveals the elegant scalloped border and surrounding calligraphy, while the high-relief legends rise sharply from the fields on both sides. A hint of warm brown toning complements the underlying mint lustre, lending depth and richness to its remarkably fresh surfaces. Graded NGC MS 65, Top Pop (1), it is a coin of exceptional visual appeal and a remarkable survivor of this artistic series. Exceedingly rare.
