Description

Bengal Sultanate, Silver Tanka, Struck on a broad flan, Arabic Month Jamadi-I, Struck in the name of Shams ud-din Iltutmish, Sultan of Delhi the Caliph al-Mustansir Billah (AH 628-633 /1230-1236 AD), during the Bengali governorship of Malik Tughril Tughan Khan (1233-1243), Obv: Arabic legend The Kalima Shahada with "al-mustansir billah amir al mominin" within a circle, "Darb hada al-sikka-fi al-munsiff min Jamadi al-Aula (Arabic month Jamadi I)", at the margin, Rev: Arabic legend "al-sultan al azam Shams ud dunya wa'l din Abu'l Muzaffar Iltutmish al sultan nasir amir" within a double square, word "Allah" twice in opposite side "al-mominin" at the bottom margin, (Wt: 10.66 gms, Dia: 30.05 mm), (Unlisted for the type in GG), no test mark, die crack, some flatness, sharp and centrally struck, superb luster, AU-UNC, Extremely Rare.

Comment :  This silver tanka of Shams ud-Din Iltutmish represents a previously unlisted and unpublished type, distinguished by its broad flan, unusual striking style, and an unrecorded marginal inscription. The coin is struck in the name of Shams ud-Din Iltutmish, Sultan of Delhi, and the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustansir Billah, and notably includes the Arabic month Jamad I, a rare feature for tankas of this period.As part of a recent series of numismatic discoveries from the reign of Iltutmish, this specimen offers advanced collectors a rare opportunity to acquire a newly recorded and unusual type.
