Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II Vikramaditya, (ca. 383-412 AD), Gold Dinar (Wt: 8.24 gms, Dia: 17.09 mm), Archer type with sword on waist and Garuda with a Cobra in neck.
Obverse :
Chandragupta, standing left, sword at side, holding arrow in right hand, left hand holding bow at top, behind to left - Garuda standard; garuda with a cobra in neck, "Chandra" in brahmi below arm, parts of brahmi legend 'deva śri maharajadhriajaśri' inouter right.
Reverse :
Ardoxsho, nimbate, seated facing on lotus, holding diadem in her right hand, left hand outstretched, holding lotus, tamgha to left, 'śri vikrama' in Brahmi to right;
Comment :
This distinctive variety of Chandragupta’s Archer type depicts the king holding a bow, with a sword at his waist, an additional weapon absent from many other varieties. Seldom encountered at auction, it also features an unusual Garuda standard, on which Garuda appears with a cobra around his neck.
