Comment : This distinctive Horseman variety depicts Chandragupta II riding a caparisoned horse without a weapon, with a crescent beside his head. The surrounding legend, “Paramabhagavato Maharajadhiraja Sri Chandraguptah,” proclaims him “the supreme devotee of Vishnu, the great king of kings, Sri Chandragupta,” expressing both his religious devotion and imperial status. On the reverse, Lakshmi’s presence complements the royal imagery, while “Ajitavikrama”, “of unconquered prowess” celebrates the sovereign’s strength. Together, the unarmed equestrian portrait and the legends present an image of confident kingship, combining authority, devotion and martial prestige.
