Delhi Sultanate, Turk Dynasty Shams-ud-din Iltutmish (AH607-633 /1210-1235AD), Silver ½ Tanka, In the name of Abbasid Caliph Al-Mustansir Billah, Obv: Arabic legend The Kalima Shahada with the Caliph "al-Mustansir Billah amir-ul-muminin", within a double square, the Quranic verse at the margin, mint name, Rev: Arabic legend "al-sultan al-a'zam shams-ud-dunya wa'l din abu'l muzaffar iltutmish al-sultan" within a double square, (Wt: 5.46 grams, Dia: 20.09 mm), (Unlisted in GG), no test mark, nice quality, sharp legends, AU, Exceedingly Rare.


Comment : This unlisted silver ½ tanka of Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, struck in the name of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustansir Billah, is a previously unpublished variety not recorded in Goron Goenka. The coin is finely struck, prominent for its full Kalima, complete caliphal titulature, and sharply defined double-square margin design.Part of a recent series of discoveries from Iltutmish's reign, this rare and highly unusual type presents a unique opportunity for collectors of Delhi Sultanate coinage to acquire a newly recorded issue of exceptional historical and numismatic significance.
