Comment : This newly discovered and unlisted silver ½ tanka of Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish, of the Budaun type and dated AH 629, represents a previously undocumented type in the Goron and Goenka catalogue. A key feature of this important discovery is the full and clearly engraved invocation of the Abbasid Caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah, together with the Hijri date spelled in Arabic words, a combination rarely seen on fractional tankas. The sharp, centrally placed legends and fabric confirm its issue for circulation, rather than ceremonial use. Part of a recent series of numismatic discoveries from the reign of Iltutmish offeredcoin provides a significant opportunity for advanced collectors of Delhi Sultanate coinage to acquire a newly recorded type.
