Description

Delhi Sultanate, Turk Dynasty, Shams ud-din Kayumarth (AH 689 /1290 AD), Hadrat Dehli Mint, Silver Tanka, Obv: Arabic legend "al-sultan al-a'zam Shams ud dunya wa'l din abu'l Muzaffar Kayumarth al-sultan", Rev: Arabic legend "al-Imam al-Mustasim amir al mominin", (Wt: 10.27g, Dia: 30.03 mm), (GG # D190), no test mark, nice quality, about extremely fine, Extremely Rare.

Kayumarth (Shams ud-Din Kayumars) was a three-year-old boy when he was briefly made Sultan after the fall of his father, Mu'izz ud-Din Kaiqubad, the last ruler of the Turk (Mamluk) dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate; he was placed on the throne by Turkic nobles as a puppet ruler in a last attempt to retain power, but his rule was purely symbolic due to his age and the political instability at the time, especially with the rising power of Jalal ud-din Khalji, who soon overthrew the Turk faction, deposed the child ruler, and established the Khalji dynasty, ending Turk rule in Delhi; Kayumarth likely did not live long afterward, and his coins are extremely rare because his reign was very short and lacked real authority, making any coinage issued in his name scarce and historically significant.
