Historical Note: Imperial Elegance from Itawa

Struck at Itawa, modern-day Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, this rupee carries Farrukhsiyar’s confident declaration of sovereignty over “sea and land.” The poetic inscription combines an appeal to divine favour with the assertion of imperial authority, continuing the Mughal tradition of expressing kingship through finely engraved Persian verse.

The present specimen is distinguished by its broad flan, balanced strike, and complete borders on both sides, allowing the inscriptions and ornamental details to be appreciated in full. These qualities give it a Nazarana-like appearance, although its presentation purpose cannot be established from appearance alone. Soft grey toning highlights the raised calligraphy, lending this handsome rupee depth, elegance, and considerable visual appeal. Rare.
