Gupta Empire, Chandragupta II Vikramaditya (ca. AD 383-412), Gold dinar (Wt: 7.81 gm, Dia: 18.02 mm), Choice XF, Archer Type.

Obverse :
Chandragupta II standing facing, nimbate head left, wearing short curly hair, tight-fitting cap, tight-fitting Kushana style clothing, and jeweled armbands, arrow in right hand, grounded bow in left, Garuda standard to left, Chandra to inner right, parts of brahmi legends 'Deva Sri Maharajadhiraja' around.

Reverse :
Goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, seated in the padmasana posture on a lotus, diadem in right hand, lotus stalk in left, tamgha to left, brahmi legends 'Sri Vikramah', partial dotted border.

Comment : Chandragupta II continued his father's gold coin types and created several new types. The archer type was continued from Samudragupta's mintage and is the most common of Chandragupta II's gold coins. The warrior imagery pairs with Chandragupta II's new coin types of the rider and the lion-slayer, referring to the many new lands conquered under his reign. With Chandragupta II at the helm, the Gupta Empire's borders were extended deep into Punjab to the north, Bengal in the east, and to the Arabian Sea to the south, becoming the largest geopolitical entity of ancient India.
