Humayun’s Gold Mithqal — A Mughal Link to Badakhshan
Badakhshan held a special place in the early history of the Mughals. Babur brought the mountainous region under his authority and entrusted its government to his son Humayun before the latter inherited the Mughal throne in 1530. Situated beyond Kabul, Badakhshan connected the dynasty’s Indian ambitions with its Central Asian heritage.
The small gold mithqal fractions associated with Badakhshan reflect that connection. Struck to a local weight standard and often without a mint name, they carried Humayun’s name far from the principal cities of his Indian realm. Their compact size belies their historical interest: each piece records Mughal authority in a region where members of the wider Timurid family continued to exercise local power.
A gold mithqal of Humayun is thus a reminder that the early Mughal world extended well beyond India, and that Badakhshan remained closely tied to the fortunes of Babur’s descendants.
