“Ta Falak” — May the Coin Endure as Long as the Heavens Revolve
This Lahore Sawai rupee, dated AH 1019 / RY 5, bears the “Ta Falak” couplet, expressing a poetic wish for the lasting currency of Jahangir’s coinage. The verse may be rendered:
“As long as the heavens revolve, may the coin of Lahore remain current in the world in the name of Shah Jahangir.”
The imagery of the revolving heavens gives the inscription a sense of permanence, associating the emperor’s name with the enduring cosmic order. By naming both Lahore and Jahangir, the couplet combines the identity of the issuing mint with a declaration of imperial authority.
Weighing 14.25 grams, the present coin belongs to Jahangir’s Sawai series, struck at a standard 25% above the regular rupee weight. Its substantial silver fabric and expressive Persian verse bring together two defining features of his early coinage: experimentation with weight and the use of poetry to celebrate sovereignty. Graded by PCGS as MS 61, Extremely Rare in MS grade.
