Description
Jahangir (AH 1014-1037/1605-1627 AD) Surat Mint, Silver Rupee, AH 1030 / RY 15, Shahrewar (Virgo), Obverse : “Zarb Surat, Mah Shahrewar Ilahi”. Reverse : “Nur al-Din Jahangir badshah”, (Wt: 11.44 gm approx, 19.07 mm) approx, (KM # 148.1). with floral background.
This richly ornamented Surat rupee displays bold, flowing Persian calligraphy against an intricate background of floral scrollwork. Delicate curling stems, pointed leaves and small rosettes fill the spaces between the inscriptions, while elongated horizontal strokes lend structure to the composition. The contrast between the substantial raised lettering and finely engraved botanical details gives both faces considerable depth and visual appeal. An attractive example of Jahangir’s decorative silver coinage, distinguished by the density and variety of its floral ornamentation. Uncirculated, Rare in such grade.
