Jahangir as Salim In Year 50 - A Rupee at the Turn of Two Reigns

The couplet “Malik-ul-Mulk sikka zad bar zar, Shah Sultan Salim Shah Akbar” may be rendered: “The sovereign of the realm, Sultan Salim, [son of] Shah Akbar, struck his coin upon gold.” Although the verse refers to gold, it also appears on the silver rupees of this series.

This issue preserves Salim’s personal name alongside that of his father, Akbar, while retaining the dating system of Akbar’s reign. Aban of Ilahi year 50 coincided with Jahangir’s accession in 1605, placing the coin at a significant moment of imperial transition. Its combination of the name Salim and Akbar’s year count provides a tangible link between the two reigns. The term “pre-accession name” describes the name used on the coin as 'Salim' instead of Jahangir.  pre-accession name, Salim, are known from only three mints Ahmadabad, Agra and Kabul. Present coin is Very rare for Ahmedabad series.
