A Prince’s Claim to the Mughal Throne
Murad Bakhsh, then governor of Gujarat, proclaimed himself emperor in 1657, asserting his sovereignty through coins struck in his own name. He allied with his brother Aurangzeb during the struggle for the Mughal throne, but their partnership was short-lived. Aurangzeb had him arrested in 1658, and, after imprisonment, Murad was executed at Gwalior in 1661 on Aurangzeb’s orders. His coinage preserves the brief imperial ambitions of a prince whose alliance with his brother ultimately sealed his fate. A handsome AU 58 specimen displaying bold calligraphy within well-defined square frames. Much of the surrounding marginal inscription remains visible, while bright silver surfaces and delicate darker toning around the lettering enhance the coin’s depth and visual appeal. Rare.
