This gold pagoda belongs to the early coinage of Tipu Sultan's reign. Its mint, Nagar (Bednur), had been renamed Haidarnagar by his father, Haidar Ali. Captured by the British in early 1783 and subsequently recovered by Tipu, the town provides a significant historical setting for this issue, struck shortly after the restoration of Mysorean control. The prominent letter ‘Ha’, representing Haidar Ali’s initial, preserves a direct link with Tipu’s father and predecessor. Paired with the reverse legend “He is the Just Sultan,” it combines dynastic continuity with an assertion of royal authority. The inclusion of the mint name, Hijri date and regnal year makes this small gold coin a particularly informative record of Tipu Sultan’s early rule.
