Rukn-ud-din Firuz, son of Shams-ud-din Iltutmish, ascended the throne of Delhi in 1235 AD, supported by nobles who favoured him over his sister Razia. His reign lasted less than seven months. While Firuz devoted himself to personal pleasures, his mother, Shah Turkan, exercised much of the authority. Her harsh treatment of members of the royal household and growing opposition among the nobles provoked widespread unrest. Firuz was deposed and subsequently put to death, paving the way for Razia Sultan’s accession. His silver tankas survive as numismatic witnesses to this brief and turbulent succession following the death of one of the Delhi Sultanate’s most influential rulers.
