Struck at Daulatabad in AH 1068 / RY 32, this elegant mohur belongs to a distinctive late series whose eight-lobed, scalloped design is known from only a few mints, including Shahjahanabad, Akbarabad, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, and Daulatabad. Its ornamental frames lend a refined beauty to an issue produced during the troubled closing chapter of Shah Jahan’s reign. Following his illness in 1657, the struggle among his sons culminated in Aurangzeb’s seizure of power in 1658. Against this backdrop, the mohur continued to proclaim Shah Jahan’s imperial name and titles, preserving in gold the authority of an emperor whose throne was under threat. This coin stands as a striking witness to the transition between two Mughal reigns.
