Comment :
The Audumbaras were an ancient tribal community centred around present-day Pathankot in Punjab and the adjoining Himalayan foothills of Himachal Pradesh. Their coinage provides valuable evidence of the regional powers that flourished in northern India during the centuries before the Common Era.
Traditionally attributed to the Audumbaras, this silver drachma belongs to the intriguing “Mahadeva” series. Its humped bull, elephant and trident combine striking animal imagery with religious symbolism, while the legends in Kharoshthi and Brahmi reflect the region’s overlapping script traditions. The precise issuing authority remains debated, although long associated with the Audumbaras, these coins also resemble issues of the Vemakas. This uncertainty makes the series particularly significant for the study of early coinage in the Punjab–Himalayan region.
